Math Woes No Mo'
Let's get a few things straight: I haven't had a math class since eleventh grade, and that was more years ago than I'd care to admit. In fact, I took "lab science" courses as an undergraduate to avoid taking math in college, and I never had to touch a math class for my Masters. Even so, I found myself having to cram for a GRE to get into a doctoral program--and I'd forgotten how to do math without a calculator!Pre-Algebra Essentials for Dummies is usually spot-on with its explanations, and it's well-written and accessible, but I'm one of those "learn by doing" people, and I simply didn't find enough practice problems to really drive home what I was learning. This may have been my own confidence issue, but a few more problems at the end of each section (with answers and explanations) would have been much more helpful. As a refresher, it may be enough--but I was reteaching myself, and more practice was definitely necessary. That said, the word problem chapters are excellent. For the first time, I really felt like I understood the concept behind a word problem, and I found using the methods in the book sincerely helped.

Learning Pre-Algebra is now fun
I bought this book to learn Pre-Algebra to help my daughter with Algebra. Very easy to follow and it's encouraged me and my daughter to learn together and practice so that she becomes better with Algebra. I enjoy learning myself. Excellent way of describing and teaching how to approach the solving of problems. I am learning quite a bit. Things I knew it's a refresher and things I don't, it's easy for me to learn.I'm going to look into the next book with more Algebra than just the Pre-Algebra. I thought I was going to get into more of Algebra what she is studying, but this is Pre. That's okay, it will give us both a stronger foundation in Math

Very disappointed
I am very disappointed. I was really looking forward to receiving this book as I'm starting school soon and need the extra practice, just to receive the book and most of the pages are cut off. Some of the writing is slanted but more than half the book has pages cut off. I shared just a few pictures. Going to send back but debating if I should order another one or just choose another book. The book itself seems to be very helpful & I like the size but can't do much of I can't read it. And that's why I gave it two stars.I will definitely give a update.

not mathmatically inclined this book is for you
The book breaks down every step into much simpler terms and explains the WHY?. I'm one of those people who doesn't understand, unless I know the why.like why do they use letters in algebra instead of numbers. simple question and the book gave me a simple answer and it made it much easier to focus on the problems and learn how to work them.there are a lot of little things it explains like the positive numbers, negative numbers and how - - cancels eachother out. ect. good book for those us that are not mathematically inclined.

I'm no dummy, but.....
I'm pretty good with Algebra, but a friend of mine asked for this! He's the dummy, not me!!! LOL. He says it is helping him a lot, and he's hoping to sharpen up his skills and get into a college soon!

Not for the Kindle
I'm new to the Kindle and love it. I'm still buying too many books on impulse (a trait that calms down eventually I hope). Being quite old, and seeing this book in passing as I was trawling through the books on offer, I figured it'd be fun to re-visit a subject that I really didn't get on with in my younger days, and finally get some fun out of learning maths.A HUGE MISTAKE.The formatting of the Kindle version (I can't speak for the paper version) makes the thing completely unintelligible. It's a maths book, a maths book for dummies and boy, it had me going.Very early on in the book, a book that up until then had been quite easy going, well-paced, and not overly chummy (books that are too friendly annoy me, I'm British), we're given a few 'very easy examples of exponents', which for the uninitiated reader, as I was, is the superscripted number after a number... 2 squared, 2 cubed, 10 to the power of 10, that sort of thing. In the Kindle version, and I'm copying this directly from the book....For example, 23 means to multiply 2 by itself 3 times.102=100 (1 with two 0s)107=10,000,000 (1 with seven 0s)I'm not Kidding! It's careless beyond belief. Your sitting there reading along and it's like someone's crept up behind you and slapped you around the head with a fish. Until you realise what a mess this book is, you're just staring at the screen trying to make some sense of what you're reading because `surely this person must know what their talking about, they've written a bloomin' book on the subject, it has to be me just being more stupid and ignorant than I ever thought possible'. Then the penny drops, it's not me, it's the book.Honestly, if there was a counter I could slam this book down on, and demand my money back, I'd cue all night to be first in the shop.I'm sure the paper version is a great book but this is my only Kindle disappointment so far.A few weeks later and i've got through the book. it's actually not bad, but you still get a little jab every time you get to an un-superscripted exponent.
