Essette Oxford Poly 8-Pocket Folder -- Letter Size The Quick and Easy Way or Take Charge and Cut the Clutter.
I have 7 letter-size file drawers filled with everything from essential end-of-life papers and instructions to recipes for healthy living to things I am currently reading. I tried to make more room in my files by placing large subjects in notebooks which I filed on book shelves. This did not work -- the notebooks took up too much space and I had a difficult time locating what I was looking for. When I ran across these wonderful 8-pocket folders I could see how I could really organize everything and possibly save room at the same time. I am 81 years old and am trying to last as long as possible; so I have my apartment in a life-care facility filled with exercise equipment and programs. I used 30 pockets for that project (placed instructions for each exercise program and/or equipment in one pocket). When finished, I had 4 folders (each with 8 pockets) containing 32 programs filed in 4 hanging files instead of the previous 32 programs in 32 hanging files. I used a Post-It Roll of labeling tape that you pull off in the size you want. I labeled the front of each hanging file with the title of all 8 programs in the folder. Inside the folder, I put a label on the front of each pocket showing the title of the program in that pocket. This was so easy because with this tape, you can remove it and either discard it and write a new one, or if you need to put another one in a folder and move the others back to make room, you can just move everything back ond pocket and move the pocket label with it. When you reach the pocket you have emptied for your new program, just write the program title with a black pen on the tape and stick it to the front of the pocket. Then you still have only 4 labels to correct. I write the titles in alphabetic order on each of the labels and just stick them on the file folder so I read the hanging file label the same way I would read a book title with the book lying on its side. I know this is a lot of reading for you, but the process not only saved me lots of room and gave me two empty pockets to use when I add another activity, it gave me a much greater benefit of being able to organize my files so I can quickly retrieve whatever I am looking for. There wasn't much need to organize the exercise file, but the medical file was another thing. I have medical payment files, medicine files, instructions from doctors, appointments. I put all my current information and instructions in one folder, the list of prescribed and over the counter medicines I take and the medicines I am allergic to in one pocket. I keep this folder with its 8 pockets in a file next to my living room chair where I have my computer. I have to update my medication list everytime a doctor changes my medications and make a copy for the HealthCare Center here and always have current copies with me when I go to the hospital for a doctor's appointment. I have other folders and medical information in the regular files but have them under entities that deal with insurance and payments. I used another folder for family activities -- one for address labels I preprint for each of them so I don't have to write their addresses or mine everything I send them a package or a letter. Instead of having a hanging file for each family member, I now have a family labels folder with 8 pockets. I went through a lot of files and used up all of my folders I purchased in the first order so I placed another order. The seller sent me the folders in a nice box that I kept by my chair until I had used them all, but with the second order I had gained so much file cabinet space that I was able to stow the new folders there until I have them all in use. In the middle of the filing project I got to more projects for residents here at the Army Residence Community. Instead of having stacks of papers, photos, CDs all over my living room, I put each project in a folder. My next big thing is my inventory file. I have furniture and other items that I currently file under the room they where they are located. If I give something away and it requires instructions to use it, I can quickly retrieve it from the file, but there is a problem if I have moved something from one room to another and I have tile floors in every room to help me move things. After the two projects for the ARC I will get back to the files and start with the Inventory section.
