Q: Can you put a lemon in the hand guard?

I am sorry ,it can't be work.When zesting lemon you should take off hand guard.Hand guard was design for little size food, you can put little piece of cheese, nutmeg, garlic in the guard. The size of hand guard is 1.69*1.69inch, so it limits the size of food.

Q: Does this work on hard cheeses only?

It's sharp for hard cheese, also works on lemon.

Q: Does the cover go inside the sliding piece that holds item to be grated? Or does it go atop that piece? Do you have to press down on item to grate it?

The actual grater snaps onto the container. The black top, which holds your food item, slips into a notch on either side of the top piece keeping it in place to glide back and forth. Depending on what you're grating will determine the amount of pressure you will need. It's easy to use and I'm really happy with this purchase.

Q: Do I want fine or coarse for fresh ginger for Asian cooking?

Good tool.

So far I’ve only used nutmeg in it and it does a great job. If you slide the top back towards the handle the top comes of no problem. It’s easy to clean and use.

An Excellent Gibger Shredder

The plastic frame which it encases is rather flimsy. I wish it was encased by a steel frame. But this is my second piece because I love the shredder.
