A gripping sci-if tale
I would give this 4.5 stars if I could - mainly because I wanted more from the ending - to see some of the impact on Mark’s relationships with the crew as well as what next for the NASA personnel on the ground.I really enjoyed the juxtaposition between Mark’s humorous approach to his predicament compared to the seriousness at NASA and the Hermes crew. As well as the physical jeopardy, I liked the interplay of the mental toll on the protagonists that comes across well.Part diary style, part narrative, the writing works well to keep the tension ever present, with the reader always remembering that Mark is on the brink of disaster and death. Hard not to think how you would handle such a situation, and be ever thankful you do. It have the skills to consider exploratory space flight! All being said, a really enjoyable book that is easy to read, and recommended for anyone looking for a relaxing distraction.

Do not -- DO NOT -- start reading this on a work night (4.5 stars)
I picked up this book at the recommendation of a friend, and I did not put it down until I finished it a few hours later.I've seen this book described as "Apollo 13 meets Cast Away". I would agree, and add "...Starring MacGyver". It is a fast-paced description of the year-and-a-half that an astronaut spends stranded on Mars, and the numerous improvisations he has to make to survive until help arrives from Earth.Admittedly, character development is marginal (though we do get to see a bit of each of the main characters' personalities, and some great humor). The star here is the story of the improvisations the hero has to come up with to adjust for each adversity after it occurs. If you liked the movie "Apollo 13", you will probably really enjoy this. If you are an engineer of any kind -- or just someone who is intensely curious about how gadgets work -- you will almost assuredly love it.

Such an amazing book. The science may seem daunting but the happy go lucky narration keeps you interested. The ending is the best part,as it reflects upon humanity in such a positive and optimistic tone that it makes you remember the good in people.

Bellissimo romanzo!
Avevo visto il film e letto il libro in versione italiana: questo l'ho regalato ai figli gemelli di mia cugina, che hanno 11 anni e sono di madrelingua inglese... Gli è piaciuto tantissimo, hanno comprato anche "Artemis".

MY FAV
This is my absolute favorite novel! I got the audio book first, which I absolutely recommend by the way. I loved the story and Mark Watney so much that I had to get a physical copy of the book. I usually prefer hard cover books, but the guy on this one is so yum, so I had to get this paperback edition xD

This should be the TEEN READER Edition!
Don't get me wrong -- this book is terrific. And if I were reading it just myself, I would have given it 5 stars. It is compelling, well-written, enjoyable for this non-scientist, even with all the scientific descriptions. However, I bought it to read aloud to my 8 year old and am finding it not at all appropriate in places! There is a reference to a "prostitute" (a concept I hadn't yet discussed with my kid) and a joke about drilling a woman. There is also quite a lot of language that isn't really kid appropriate -- "hell" and "crap" etc. I'm sure this is toned down, but I wish this had been marketed as the TEEN edition so I knew to wait a few years to read it to my kid!

Great story, and toned down fairly well
A good version of the book for tween years -- there's still a slight bit of language, but nothing that kids wouldn't have already overheard at school, and nothing incredibly profane.

Successful Gift for Grandsons
I purchased this for my son's family. Both boys, ages 7 and 9, enjoy the book. Their mother is reading it aloud to them. Children who are into Space stories that have realism, adventure and challenges for the main characters, will enjoy this Young Readers Edition.
