A great thriller with a couple of laugh out loud scenes that has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. Also a great, sexy soundtrack the complements the background of late 1980s NYC. What a time that must've been! The scenes involving the personal ads are so fun and Ellen Barkin and Al Pacino have a great chemistry.

I like all of Pacino’s work and this was a great example of it.

Sea of love(Blu-Ray)Dir. Harold Becker3.5/5An intriguing murder mystery. Al Pacino plays a cop(of course) in New York in 1989. There is a string of Murders. Apparently men who are putting poems in singles ads in the paper end up dead. It's Pacinos job to find out who's doing the Murders. He meets several women a long the way who may have answered the ads. Then he rubs into Ellen Barkin. Who he ends up forming a relationship with. But things aren't how they seem. This is a seedy movie too. Full of corny jazz music and a grimy feel. It's a good movie though and if you haven't seen this it's on Netflix. Siskel And Ebert gave this two thumbs up back in 1989 if you care about that kind of thing.

Seems to me 1989's "Sea of Love,", like the late Rodney Dangerfield, seldom gets the respect it deserves. It's generally mentioned in the same paragraph as those other terrific 1980's romantic thrillers: "Against All Odds," "The Year of Living Dangerously," "Tequila Sunrise," "The Big Easy," "Body Heat," Body Double," and, if you insist, "No Way Out." But "Sea" has its own particular strengths.For starters, the smart script is by Richard Price, New York born and bred, with lots of street cred. Someone on Internet Movie Database states Price was writing this script for Dustin Hoffman, who demanded too many rewrites, so Price gave it to Al Pacino, another New York actor. At any rate, Price had burst into print with "The Wanderers," a novel about young New York gang members, while still a young man. He really gets New York down on his pages, and also in his scripts: this is a real New York, New York movie. It was produced by Martin Bregman and directed by Harold Becker; they undoubtedly add to the richness of the city we see on screen.In its broad outlines, the script is original. Some of the subplots are the usual cop shop stuff that should have been retired by now: the jaded, burnt-out cop looking to retirement; the second generation cop looking to live up to the first; the cop's partner who steals the wife. But the plotting's tight, the ending's unepected, and the movie's very well acted. Al Pacino stars, giving us another New York cop, Frank Keller, who's investigating a serial killer. Ellen Barkin, at her most beautiful, plays the number one suspect and love interest. Their love scenes really could scorch the screen.This movie of the same name, made 30 years later, evidently uses "Sea of Love," an evergreen rock and roll hit, as a theme. The song was written by New Orleans native John Phillip Baptiste, AKA Phil Phillips, who had a hit with it on its first release in 1959. John Goodman brings a lot to this movie: he ably supports the stars, when they've got their clothes on, playing Pacino's new cop partner Sherman Touhey. And when the Missouri-born Goodman delivers an "a capella" version of "Sea of Love," in that New Orleans accent he's entitled to use, well, he just stops the show.This movie has great New York ambiance, a good plot, good acting, a good sound track, Ellen Barkin at her most gorgeous, hot sex scenes, and touches of humor. It stands up to repeated viewings, and like Mr. Dangerfield, it deserves some respect.

This movie had everything, humor, drama, and suspense. Definitely an excellent buy.

It was a gift for a friend of mine but I decided to watch it. It was just OK. One time is enough.

This is one of my favorite mysteries. The plot centers around two recent divorcees, played by Pacino and Barkin who meet each other through a singles magazine. Pacino who clearly suffers from his divorce, is a police detective. He not only misses his wife, but struggles with a chronic alcohol problem, and the ignomy of being forced to work with his ex-wife's new husband. Ellen Barkin plays a divorced single mom, clearly able to adjust to her new life. She is tough and very much in control. She's also attractive, passionate, and in no hurry to start a serious new relationship. I can't say much more without giving the plot away, but be prepared for an emotional adreneline rush after they meet. The film has some excellent plot twists, involving identity issues, John Goodman revises his Dan Connors image, (with a twist), desperate, almost tragic loneliness, (some of us never find the happy ending)and one of the most torrid love scenes this side of an X rating. Ultimately the movie is about hope and the redeeming value of love.This is the third copy of this movie I've bought. Be careful about loaning it out to friends ... : )

Another great Al Pacino movie and Ellen Barkin sets the screen on fire with such chemistry that hasnt been seen since the Old Hollywood Days. Its a must see!

1989 dreht sich auf einem Plattenspieler eine Scheibe mit Phil Phillips' 1959 entstandenen Song "Sea Of Love", neben demTischchen mit dem Gerät ein Bett, darauf bäuchlings ein nackter Mann mit einer Schußwunde am Hinterkopf.Der erfahrene Polizist Frank Keller (Al Pacino), geschiedener und dem Alkohol zusprechender Mittvierziger, wird auf den Fall angesetzt, und bald stellt sich heraus, dass es kein Einzelfall ist, drei Männer waren in den letzten Monaten unter fast identischen Umständen aufgefunden worden, und so bildet Frank mit Detectiv Sherman Touhey (John Goodman) von einem benachbarten Revier mit solchen Fällen ein Team. Da alle Opfer vorher unter "Kontakte", "einsame Herzen" oder ähnlicher Rubrik in Reimform weibliche Bekanntschaft gesucht haben, wird eine Falle vorbereitet. Es wird eine Anzeige gedichtet, und abwechselnd Frank und Sherman als Gast und Kellner suchen kontaktwillige Frauen, um an Fingerabdrücke zu kommen und die vermutete Serientäterin zu fassen.Das Rollenspiel der beiden Cops entbehrt manchmal nicht einer gewissen Komik, ist aber nicht Klamauk, in einer Szene trifft Frank eine sehr gepflegte Lady in den Sechzigern, die bald durchschaut, dass Franks Kontaktsuche eine Haken haben wird, und als später eine weitere Frau Franks Tisch verlässt. nachdem sie ihre Fingerprints auf einem Glas hinterlassen hat, sieht die Dame Frank aus gewisser Distanz an, man sieht Pacino als Frank sehr schön an, dass er jetzt am liebsten so klein geworden wäre, dass er mit Hut unter den Teppich gepasst hätte, starke Szene! Frank ist verwanzt, und auch in der Küche und im Gastraum sind zahlreiche getarnte Cops-Pärchen, draußen steht ein Überwachungswagen, getarnt als TV-Sender-Fahrzeug.Nach wenigen Tagen erscheint eine aufregend schöne Blondine an Franks Tisch, Helen (Ellen Barkin). die auch schnell durchschaut, dass da ein faules Spiel abläuft und ohne ihr Glas berührt zu haben verschwindet, kurze Zeit später trifft er die Frau, die eine Filiale eines Schuhgeschäfts leitet, sie beginnen eine heiße Affäre, auch als zunehmend Indizien auf Helen als Täterin hinweisen, so zum Beispiel in ihrer Wohnung eine Sammlung mit Single -Platten, die Hülle mit "Sea Of Love" ist leer.Als Frank meint, dass zu viele Spuren auf Helen als Täterin hinwiesen, konfrontiert er sie mit seinem Verdacht, Helen ist stinksauer, dass er mit falschen Karten gespielt hat und verlässt ihn. Kurze Zeit später wird Frank mit einer Pistole im Nacken gezwungen, sich bäuchlings auf sein Bett zu legen.Goodman und Pacino spielen wunderbar, und zwischen letzterem und der attraktiven Ellen Barkin scheinen wirklich Funken zu sprühen. Elllen Barkin strahlt eine Wansinnserotik aus, ohne dass wir sie mehr als einmal dezent von der Seite nackt sähen. Und es weisen wirklich viele Ermittlungsergebnisse, so zum Beispiel Zeitungsseiten mit rot umrandeten Anzeigen mit Magnet an ihre Kühlschranktür platziert, auf sie hin, das Finale ist hochspannend."Für mich ist "Sea Of Love" ein spannender Thriller mit zwei überzeugenden ganz unterschiedlichen Charakteren als Cops und einer wunderschönen Ellen Barkin, 1989 mit 35 Jahren sicher eine der schönsten Darstellerinnen, die ich schon vor Jahrzehnten in der Komödie "Switch- Die Frau im Manne" von Regielegende Blake Edwards 1991 gedreht, bewundert habe. Richtig bekannt geworden ist sie durch "The Big Easy" an der Seite von Dennis Quaid 1987.Ich kann diesen schon etwas "betagten" Erotikthriller nur wärmstens empfehlen.Doc Halliday

Sea of Love est un de ces films que l'on a plaisir à voir ou revoir si ce n'est pas déjà fait. un classique du genre incontournable.
