Sprays are often most convenient but a nice comfortable topical insect repellent lotion will typically last longer and also be more resilient to swimming and other active use. While nothing is 100% effective against the clouds you sometimes get, I thought the picaridin spray worked at least as well as the DEET compounds I've always used, both sprays and the slightly scary 80%+ liquid.
